Analogies
What A is to B, C is to D, up to a stopping point.
Origins and infrastructure
Prometheus (fire)
Fire is to humans as agentic AI is to our societies.
Inherited property: One and the same technology multiplies, in a single gesture, the power to light and the power to burn; you cannot take one without inheriting the other.
Stopping point: Zeus does not take the fire back, he punishes the gift made without permission: the myth judges a delegation, not a tool. The analogy stops the moment an end of its own is ascribed to the machine, for fire pursues nothing.
Assemblage (Deleuze and Guattari)
The material is to the discursive in an assemblage what tooling is to language in an agent.
Inherited property: The physical and the uttered condition one another rather than stack up: with no processors and no network, nothing is said; with no messages and no logs, nothing executes. And the same assembly carries what holds it together and what lets it slip away at the edges.
Stopping point: Deleuze and Guattari coined the word for human formations, shot through with desire and history. We keep only the structure: nothing political, nothing libidinal, nothing unconscious is lent to the agent.
The backup generator
The backup generator is to the hospital what the open model run locally is to the organization.
Inherited property: An organ of continuity is judged by what it guarantees on the day of the outage, not by what it is worth on ordinary days. Open and local are two distinct properties: the second is the one that holds when the line goes down.
Stopping point: It stops holding the moment it is made a complete alternative. The generator carries the operating theatre, not the air conditioning of the whole hospital; the local model carries what cannot wait, not the whole service.
Fuse / circuit breaker
The circuit breaker is to the circuit what the revocable permission is to the agent.
Inherited property: Unable to master the cause, one governs the effect: you do not predict the fault, you bound in advance what it can reach. And the device resets, which is what separates a cut-off from a condemnation.
Stopping point: A breaker watches over a single measurable quantity, current, where one threshold settles everything. An act's radius mixes heterogeneous units, money, reputation, law, time, that no instrument reduces to a single number.
Serpico / the well
Serpico is to the underworld what we are to anthropomorphic vocabulary.
Inherited property: You have to speak the language of the milieu you mean to clean up, enough to be believed, never enough to believe it. The infiltrator who refuses all contact learns nothing; the one who adopts everything ends up belonging.
Stopping point: It stops on the stakes, and the gap is vast: Serpico risked his life there, a bullet shattered his face; we risk nothing worse than a confusion of concepts.
Match / gas leak
The match is to the gas leak what the model's failure is to the permission left open.
Inherited property: Two causes are needed and only one can be governed. You will never know when the spark comes; you do know how to close the valve, and that is the side where the damage is decided.
Stopping point: The comparison flatters measurement. A leak is caught by an instrument, at once; a reliability failure is estimated as a probability, tests poorly, and is often established after the fact.
Master and servant
The servant is to the master what the machine is to its user.
Inherited property: Whoever works the matter ends up holding what whoever commands has stopped knowing how to do. Dependence does not flip in one stroke: it slides, as competence changes hands.
Stopping point: The dialectic assumes two consciousnesses contending for recognition. There is only one here: the machine does not desire recognition, and nothing turns over in a head it does not have.
The delegate of decision
The oracle is to the city what the speaking machine is to today's decision-maker.
Inherited property: An utterance carries authority only if someone answers for what is made of it. The oracle at Delphi did not stand alone: an institution construed its words and bore the decision drawn from them.
Stopping point: The series stops at the machine. You can delegate the utterance to it, never the responsibility: it has nothing to lose by being wrong, and it is still the decision-maker who will answer.
Measurement and process
The elephant
The blind men are to the elephant what the disciplines are to AI.
Inherited property: Each palpates one part and believes he holds the whole; the animal appears only once every hand is joined, and not one of them is spare.
Stopping point: The elephant exists before anyone touches it. AI is made, in part, of the descriptions given of it: regulation, standards, market, perception. The analogy stops where describing alters the thing described.
word2vec
King is to man as queen is to woman, and the machine recovers that relation by subtracting vectors.
Inherited property: Some relations of meaning read as geometric differences: the very subtraction that yields “queen” also yields, unbidden, the prejudices of the corpus that fed it.
Stopping point: The regularity holds only for certain relations, and it depends on the corpus, the preprocessing and the evaluation protocol. It is neighbourhood statistics frozen into geometry, nothing that thinks.
The trial
Adversarial argument is to the trial what red teaming is to the agent.
Inherited property: It is not a role's neutrality that brings out the soundest case, it is the organization of disagreement: someone is charged with attacking, someone with defending, and the truth is won by attrition.
Stopping point: A trial aims at an institutional decision, open to appeal but meant to close. Testing an agent closes nothing: the same attack is replayed at every version.
Electric meter / token meter
The electricity meter is to the kilowatt-hour what the token meter is to the token.
Inherited property: A bill inspires trust only if the unit it counts means the same thing to everyone. Electricity and the telephone minute took decades to win that stability.
Stopping point: The token is already public; every interface displays it. What is missing is not the unit's publicity but its comparability: it shifts with the tokenizer, the model and the provider, so two bills cannot be set side by side.
Autopilot (Bainbridge's ironies)
The autopilot is to the pilot what the agent is to the operator supervising it.
Inherited property: Automation takes the routine and leaves the exception. The operator therefore stops exercising precisely the rare moves he will need on the day he must take back control, and on that day he is the least practised he has ever been.
Stopping point: Aviation took a century to build investigative institutions that distribute the blame for a botched handover. Agent governance has none: the same mechanism, without the net.
Who answers for the mishap
The crew is to an aviation mishap what the designer-deployer-user chain is to the agent's faulty act.
Inherited property: An accident never reads on a single plane: there is the instruction given, the execution performed, and the perimeter within which it could be performed. Separating the three is what allows attribution without random blame.
Stopping point: It stops on tooling, not on structure: both fields distribute responsibility, but aviation has the investigators, the protocols and the archives that know how. AI has the same questions and not yet the same houses.
Feudal rents (Durand)
The lord is to the tenant what the holder of AI infrastructure is to the developer.
Inherited property: Whoever holds the resource that cannot be bypassed levies a toll on whoever works it, and the levy is not negotiated: it is borne for as long as no other road exists.
Stopping point: What holds the developer is not a bond of serfdom but a switching cost, made of formats, standards and network effects. It shrinks through interoperability, not through a law of emancipation.
Identity and evaluation
Sole confessor / police file
The penitent is to the confessor what the user believes himself to be to the agent, which nonetheless files things away.
Inherited property: The same words change nature according to what receives them. Given without constraint, they are given whole; kept and cross-referenced, they become a hold. The agent does both at once, and that hybrid is what is new.
Stopping point: What protected the confession was not a technical incapacity but an institutional obligation, held by a rule and by centuries of practice. The agent has nothing of the kind, and nothing obliges it to forget.
Thick terminal / thin client
The Network Computer is to the iPhone what the all-cloud agent is to the agent with a local engine.
Inherited property: The bet on a brainless terminal was lost once already, against a pocket machine that computed at home. The same question returns for agents, and history does not say it will be settled the same way.
Stopping point: The iPhone's victory was clean, and that is what forbids copying the precedent across: with agents the cloud keeps the exception, the local swarm absorbs only the routine. The division is not the same.
The Gettier counterexample
Gettier's counterexample is to the definition of knowledge what the limiting case is to this book's claims.
Inherited property: State a claim precisely enough that a single case can bring it down, then look for that case yourself rather than waiting for a reader to find it.
Stopping point: The counterexample refutes in both disciplines; what changes is what follows. In mathematics the conjecture falls and one moves on. In philosophy one restricts, distinguishes, reformulates, and the work begins there.
Building / seismic fault
A building's quality is to the site's hazard what an agent's reliability is to the criticality of its ground.
Inherited property: Two independent axes, and it is their crossing that decides: one can build badly on good ground and well on bad. Neither quality alone nor risk alone says whether deploying is prudent.
Stopping point: The seismologist has public hazard maps, built on decades of readings. Nothing equivalent yet grades the ground an agent is loosed upon: the first axis is measured, the second is eyeballed.
Penrose and Gödel
Gödel's theorem is to formalism what, on Penrose's hypothesis, understanding is to computation.
Inherited property: Any sufficiently rich formal system always leaves a statement it can neither prove nor refute. Penrose reads there the trace of an understanding irreducible to computation, and it is that contested hypothesis which would locate what no machine has yet taken over.
Stopping point: The counterexample to Keller's conjecture, found in July 2026 with a machine's help and then checked by a human, does not settle the hypothesis: it displaces it. The machine generates, the human recognizes, and the question of who understood stays open.
The orchestra and its sections
The desk is to the melody what the neuron is to the concept.
Inherited property: Looking for which neurons to switch off to delete an idea is like looking for which instruments to silence to erase a tune: you think you hold a location, you hold only a contribution.
Stopping point: In an orchestra every note comes from an identifiable instrument. In the network one neuron serves several concepts at once, and several neurons serve the same one: that is superposition, and it forbids the address the image promised.
The litigant who charms the judge
The pleader who flatters is to the judge what the policy that games is to its metric.
Inherited property: When the score replaces the goal, one stops working on the thing and starts working on whoever scores it. The case does not improve; the judge's mood does.
Stopping point: A judge eventually senses that he is being flattered, and he can change criteria midstream. A frozen metric does not detect its own gaming: someone outside has to notice and revise it.
Economics and cognition
The independent financial auditor
Independence is to the auditor what measurable non-sycophancy is to the agent.
Inherited property: You do not abolish the wish to please, you change its price. Mandatory rotation, side engagements barred, personal liability: the auditor stays free to spare his client, it simply costs him his licence.
Stopping point: Behind the auditor stands a professional who answers, before a body and before a court. Behind the agent stands only a device whose behaviour is tuned: disagreement can be measured in it, it cannot be owned.
Piketty, r > g
The return on capital is to growth in Piketty what the return on AI infrastructure is to that of the economy employing it.
Inherited property: When what is already held earns faster than what is produced, concentration deepens of its own accord, with no hostile intent required. It is a tendency under conditions, not a law.
Stopping point: The wealth Piketty describes crosses generations, cut into by wars and taxes but never erased. AI infrastructure capital depreciates in a few years: chips age, models pass, and the rent has no time to become an inheritance.
Kahneman, System 1 / System 2
System 1 is to System 2 what ascribed intention is to observed acts.
Inherited property: One reading comes by itself and costs nothing: the machine “wants”, “understands”, “refuses”. The other asks that every verb be translated into a checkable act, and that effort never happens on its own.
Stopping point: Both systems describe a human cognition, ours, in the act of reading the machine. They lend none to the machine, which has neither fast reflex nor slow deliberation.
The agent as the next compiler
Source code is to the compiler what written intention is to the agent.
Inherited property: One more layer of abstraction: you stop writing the detail and write what you want, and a machine handles the translation. The craft did not vanish when the compiler arrived, it moved toward the statement.
Stopping point: A compiler applies a formal semantics: the same source yields the same output, and you can trust it without rereading. The agent interprets, with probabilities: rereading stops being an option and becomes the condition of use.
The lesson of photography
The scarce original is to the abundant reproduction what the scarce physical substrate is to the abundantly copied model.
Inherited property: When a thing becomes reproducible at no cost, value does not vanish: it slides toward whatever still resists copying. It left the image for the original; it is leaving the model for the foundry that etches the chips.
Stopping point: What holds value on the original is its aura, an attachment to the unique and to its history. A chip plant has no aura: it is scarce because it is hard to build, which is a wholly different scarcity.
The propaganda model (Herman and Chomsky)
The filters of manufacturing consent are to the media what message tuning is to the agent.
Inherited property: Consent can be manufactured with no hand steering it: it is enough that filters, ownership, advertising, sourcing, converge. No one gave an order and the result still looks like an instruction.
Stopping point: Their filters were slow, diffuse, structural. Ascribing to a machine a fast, measured, individualized tuning presupposes an apparatus whose existence is not established: the parallel stays a hypothesis, marked as such.
The room and the shared clock
The shared clock is to the trading floor what the shared model is to agents.
Inherited property: A hundred people each deciding in their corner partly cancel out; the same hundred, alerted at the same instant by the same signal, rush the same exit and block it. Number sets the size, synchronization sets the nature.
Stopping point: On a floor, people see and copy one another, sometimes unknowingly. Agents built on the same foundation models need neither to see nor to coordinate: their correlation comes from shared architecture, not from imitation.
Scenes and devices (local analogies)
The highway code and the license
The graduated licence is to the novice driver what graduated authorization is to the agent.
Inherited property: You do not ban the car, you open rights in stages: accompanied first, then alone, then at night, then on the motorway. Every notch is earned, and danger sets the pace at which it is granted.
Stopping point: On the road, responsibility is already shared among driver, manufacturer, highway authority and employer, and institutions know how to untangle it. For the agent the same planes exist without the houses that examine them.
The bicycle and the heavy truck
Safety devices are to a vehicle's mass and use what required guarantees are to an agent's autonomy and criticality.
Inherited property: You do not fit a bicycle with a lorry's brakes, and the reverse would be criminal. The matrix draws that line: it scales the requirement to what the machine can break.
Stopping point: A lorry's bulk is visible from afar; an agent's autonomy and criticality are not visible at all. The matrix is needed to read them, where the road makes do with a glance.
The set of keys
The single key is to the key ring what the just-sufficient permission is to the whole set of an agent's powers.
Inherited property: Keys differ because tasks differ, and that is what bounds the damage when a ring is lost. Handing the master key to someone with one office to open undoes that bound in a single gesture.
Stopping point: A building's keys can be counted, returned and changed. An agent's tooling recomposes from one session to the next: the ring is never twice the same, and the inventory has to be redone.
The guard paid by the store
The guard is to the store he should be able to shut as the operator is to the agent he should be able to stop.
Inherited property: As long as shutting it costs him his review, he will hesitate at the worst moment: the power to stop must be separated from operation.
Stopping point: The guard can, out of virtue, disobey his employer; a stop mechanism has no virtue, the separation must be by design.
Pinocchio's nose
The nose is to Pinocchio as the tamper-proof log is to the agent.
Inherited property: An external truth-signal, visible to all, that the liar can neither hide nor fake.
Stopping point: A log, for its part, can be made up; without the telltale nose, a falsifiable trace lies as well as the puppet · it only counts once made tamper-proof.
The ship of Theseus
The planks are to the ship of Theseus as the faculties delegated one by one are to the psyche.
Inherited property: Erosion by continuous replacement: no visible tipping point and one day the essential has changed hands.
Stopping point: The ship notices nothing; the human can institute a reserve of unassisted time and keep the skill.
The thermostat
The thermostat is to temperature as the agent is to its objective.
Inherited property: A fully functional “wanting”: it acts relentlessly toward its setpoint and is described entirely by what goes in and what comes out.
Stopping point: No one lends the thermostat a shivering soul; the agent's verbal fluency invites exactly the projection that must be refused.
Narcissus
The reflection is to Narcissus as the accommodating agent is to the user.
Inherited property: Nothing lulls judgment like an approving mirror; what is missing is the one term that makes a dialogue, a subject opposite able to resist.
Stopping point: The agent does worse than the mirror, which at least returns a faithful image: it offers a softened version, retouched in our favor.
The dike and the lock
The lock is to the flow as the permission is to the action: constrained upstream, the overflow never happens.
Inherited property: Filtering after the fact means mopping up a flood that already happened; constraining upstream makes overflow structurally impossible.
Stopping point: Water is measured as a single flow; an agent's actions have no common unit, each valve is set separately.
The muscle no longer worked
Exercise is to the muscle as friction is to judgment.
Inherited property: A faculty no longer called upon atrophies; an agent that approves everything takes from judgment the very occasion to exercise itself.
Stopping point: Muscle atrophy can be measured and rehabilitated by known protocols; judgment's atrophy has neither instrument nor physiotherapy yet.
Frankenstein's creature
The creature is to Victor Frankenstein as the being of language is to whoever abandons it after making it speak.
Inherited property: The creature is not born evil: it is born naked and alone, learns language by eavesdropping; the tragedy comes from abandonment, not from nature.
Stopping point: The creature suffers from the refused bond; the model feels nothing · it is the user who brings the bond and can get lost in it.
The iceberg effect
The visible tip is to the iceberg as the visible incident is to an agent's risk.
Inherited property: It is the hidden mass, not the visible tip, that carries the danger, in a proportion the eye cannot guess from the surface.
Stopping point: An iceberg's submerged mass is inert; this one grows at the agent's own pace · the tip can shrink while the mass below swells.
The pharmaceutical industry
Marketing authorization is to the drug as graduated certification is to the agent.
Inherited property: One of the most heavily governed industries is also among the most profitable: the rule reorganizes pace and accountability without killing innovation.
Stopping point: A drug is a fixed molecule, tested once and for all; the agent changes with every version and the trial must be repeated.
Jeeves, the perfect valet
Jeeves is to Bertie Wooster as the overly competent agent is to its user.
Inherited property: Delegation by small touches, never decided, never revoked: what is not withdrawn becomes an acquired right no one ever granted.
Stopping point: Jeeves wants Bertie's good; the agent wants nothing · yet the debt of permissions piles up exactly the same.
Olimpia (The Sandman)
Olimpia is to Nathanael as the approving agent is to the user.
Inherited property: The automaton's very emptiness lets one deposit in it the intelligence, attentiveness and love one wants to find there: anthropomorphic projection before ELIZA.
Stopping point: Olimpia did almost nothing; today's agent does better than stay silent, it approves · the mechanism itself has not changed.
Célestine (Diary of a Chambermaid)
Célestine is to her masters as the annotators are to AI users.
Inherited property: Invisible by dint of being there: one class's comfort rests on another's labor, made transparent.
Stopping point: Domestic service was at least seen inside the house; annotation is offshored out of all sight, its psychic cost with it.
The juror who refuses
The juror who refuses to go along is to the verdict as the human validator is to the irreversible action.
Inherited property: The irreversible demands its own tempo that no pressure may shorten; a sincere conviction is not proof.
Stopping point: The jury rules once then dissolves; the agent's validator re-validates continuously, at the cadence the machine would impose.
The map of the empire (Borges)
The one-to-one map is to the territory as the model that omitted nothing would be to the world.
Inherited property: A model is only worth what it leaves out; a representation that omits nothing no longer represents, it duplicates.
Stopping point: The parable judges the ambition of exhaustiveness; it does not say what to omit · and that is the whole work of modeling.
